The tales of the tattoo motifs
Yakuza tattoo clothes
Yakuza tattoos, known as irezumi, are rich in symbolism and represent a member’s commitment, loyalty. These tattoos are traditional and require mastery of the tebori technique, often covering large areas of the body with specific artistic requirements.
As a general rule, people with tattoos above the collar line or below the wrist aren’t yakuza – most yakuza tattoos are able to be covered when wearing a business suit.
The Yakuza claim to follow a samurai code — a system built on loyalty, discipline, and honor.
The term is thought to derive from the Japanese phrase for an “8-9-3” ya-ku-sa (“good for nothing”). In the Japanese card game these cards, when added up, give the worst possible total.
