The tales of the tattoo motifs
Hannya mask tattoo clothes
The Hannya mask is a powerful symbol of protection and good luck, often used to ward off evil and emotional pain from the past. It comes from Japanese Noh theatre and has these sharp bull-like horns and metallic eyes. In the plays, the person wearing the mask plays a woman whose soul gets taken over by a demon because of jealousy. She’s dangerous, sad, and tormented, showing the complexity of human emotions.
The mask represents those dark moments in life, looking all angry and scary from the front, but from the side, it almost looks like she’s crying. Hannya masks come in different colours: white for a high-status woman, red for someone of lower class, and dark red for actual demons.
It’s one of the most iconic masks from Noh theatre. Some people think it’s creepy, while others think it’s kind of beautiful.
